Zouk

Zouk is a popular music genre that originated in the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the early 1980s, developed largely by the band Kassav'. The style blends African rhythms, Caribbean sounds, and Latin influences into a distinctive groove characterized by a moderate, flowing tempo and a pulsing bass line. Instrumentation typically includes electric guitars, keyboards, brass, and percussion, while vocals are sung predominantly in French Antillean Creole and tend to be smooth and melodic. The genre spread significantly through the Lusophone world, particularly Cape Verde, Brazil, and Portugal, where it evolved into related styles sometimes called cabo love or Brazilian zouk. In East Africa, including Tanzania, zouk gained a following through its romantic themes and danceable rhythm, and it influenced local artists working within the broader landscape of African popular and dance music.
