Singeli

Singeli is a fast-paced electronic dance music genre that originated in the Kariakoo and Manzese neighborhoods of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, emerging in the early 2010s and gaining wider recognition through the mid-2010s. It developed within working-class urban communities and draws on local taarab, dansi, and bongo flava traditions while incorporating drum machine-driven production. Its most distinctive feature is an exceptionally high tempo, typically ranging from 180 to over 300 beats per minute, giving it one of the fastest rhythmic signatures of any popular African dance genre. Vocally, Singeli features rapid, percussive delivery in Swahili and Sheng, often with call-and-response patterns and improvised street poetry. Performances frequently incorporate energetic dancing and are central to social gatherings in Dar es Salaam's informal settlements. The genre functions as a form of cultural expression for Tanzania's urban youth, reflecting everyday life, neighborhood identity, and communal celebration.
