Afrobeat

Afrobeat is a music genre that emerged in Nigeria during the late 1960s and early 1970s, developed primarily by musician and activist Fela Kuti in collaboration with drummer Tony Allen. It combines elements of traditional Yoruba music, jazz, funk, and highlife, built around complex polyrhythmic percussion, syncopated bass lines, and interlocking horn arrangements. Vocals often carry political and social commentary, reflecting Fela Kuti's outspoken criticism of corruption and authoritarian governance in postcolonial Africa. Afrobeat is distinct from the related but separate genre Afrobeats, a contemporary pan-African pop style that gained widespread international popularity in the 2010s. Both genres have found audiences across East Africa, including Tanzania, where their rhythmic structures share common ground with local traditions such as taarab and bongo flava. Afrobeat's emphasis on live instrumentation and collective musical interplay continues to influence musicians across the continent.
